**Update 2/4/14**
1) Since this post, I've found that the dry, powdery snow makes the best snow ice cream!

2) Due to all the emails and messages I've received,  I've also found that a lot of people have very serious opinions about ingesting snow. Basically, it comes down to doing what you feel is best for your family. I won't judge you for vaccinating/not vaccinating, using cloth diapers/using disposables, breastfeeding/bottle feeding, eating processed foods/eating organic, if you promise not to judge me for eating Snow Ice Cream. We really do live in the middle of nowhere so I'm not concerned about air pollutants. In fact, I'm more concerned about pollutants in our ground water due to chemicals and fertilizers from the fields than I am about pollutants above us. If I lived in a city or on a busy street, I might think differently. So, before going any further, use your own judgement and do your own research.

***********

Our big winter storm is here and we are officially snowed in. More than likely, we'll be here for a few days so I already have activities lined up to keep our 3 year old from going stir crazy. His favorite activity? Making Snow Ice Cream. When I told him it was going to snow, the first thing he asked me was, "Can we make ice cream?"

Granted, it's not Ben & Jerry's, but it's still pretty good. And, you can make it as healthy as you'd like!

Take a mixing bowl outside and scoop up about 4-5 cups of fresh (and CLEAN) snow. Back inside, mix 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 c sugar and 1 cup of milk or cream with the snow. You can add more or less sugar to suit your tastes.

TIP: Coconut milk makes GREAT Snow Ice Cream. If you want a creamer 'ice cream' use table or whipping cream.

You can even jazz up your Snow Ice Cream with your favorite toppings.

What are your favorite activities for snow days?

    1. You mix wet ingredients and fold in snow to COLD ingredients Grandma would put it on the banister on the back porch and mix when it started to freeze. The key is careful folding of ingredients if not you have a milkshake..... gotta keep the snow fluffy.

  5. I don't know if this is a dumb question but what do you do after all the ingredients are in the bowl? Just mix it? By hand if with beaters? Sounds like a great tradition to start.

    1. Not a dumb question! Just mix it by hand. I think if you beat it, it would make the snow melt.

    1. When my Mom made it she would not make it until the second snowing. I think it was to avoid pollutants.

    2. You inhale all these pollutants any ways. It's not like acid is falling from the sky

  7. There's just different pollutants in snow cone ice. Not any better really.

  8. As long as it is not the first snow of the year it should be fine. the first snow always brings the bad toxins out of the sky.

  10. Does the snow need to be packable/a certain density/icey in order to do this?

  11. Does the snow have to be a specific density in order for it to turn out well?

  12. Watch out, there have been a lot of studies recently showing that snow since 2011 has had high radiation levels which may be related to Fukushima...

  13. This was good! I was worried the snow would melt, but it didn't. I used more snow than I brought in only because I didn't pack it in too well. Make sure your cups of snow are "packed" like brown sugar! My kids love it! What a fun tradition to start and I can't wait to try flavors!

  19. Maybe if I was in the countryside somewhere, but I definitely wouldn't be taking the snow from around here, too much pollution in these skies.

  20. Please NOTE... snow forms around teeny dirt, polution, allergen particles. Think its silly?

Collect the freshest, cleanest, fluffy snow you can find. Place in jar. Melt. Think again about eating snow. We do this with the 1st graders to teach them not to eat snow at school. Guess what... no one eats snow at our school. :)

  21. It is a wonder I didn't kill all my family with snow ice cream, baby powder, home made jelly with parrafine, potato candy divided up among four and all the confectionery sugar everywhere and licking of fingers, etc. Everything we did then is wrong now. Lol get a life some of you.
